A new inclusive toilet block at Nakalama Primary School in Iganga District will help learners with disabilities stay healthy, confident and in class
Construction has officially been launched on a modern, disability-inclusive toilet block at Nakalama Primary School, a mainstream school serving learners with and without disabilities.
The launch brought together Iganga District Officials, including the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and the LC5 representative, along with the headteacher, teachers, parents, caregivers, and children with disabilities.
The challenge
An accessibility assessment and consultations with the school community found that children with disabilities at Nakalama face serious barriers to using safe, accessible and dignified toilets. Inaccessible facilities limit their privacy, independence and safety. They also expose learners to stigma, health risks and protection concerns, and affect their participation in learning. In many cases, these barriers undermine confidence and contribute to learners dropping out.

In response, IDIWA, the PTA, and partner OPDs agreed to construct a toilet block with separate wings for boys and girls. The facility will include: Accessible ramps and handrails, Appropriate toilet seats, Handwashing facilities, and a changing room for girls

More than a sanitation facility, the toilet is expected to improve hygiene and health while building learners’ confidence and independence, and helping children with disabilities stay in school and keep learning.
