1.0 INTRODUCTION
Integrated Disabled Women Activities (IDIWA) is a women-led non-profit organization committed to transforming gender norms by strengthening women and girls with disabilities and their formations to challenge patriarchy and disability-based discrimination that perpetuate inequality in society.
IDIWA is part of the broader ecosystem of feminist, women’s rights, and disability rights movements in Uganda. The organization envisions an inclusive and violence-free society.
IDIWA’s mission is to promote gender equality and the rights of women and girls with disabilities to better health and sustainable livelihoods. The overall goal is to improve the quality of life and social well-being of women and girls with disabilities.
IDIWA is seeking a suitably qualified Ugandan aged 25–35 years to join its team as a Communications Assistant. This is a part-time position, based in Iganga, with flexible physical and online work arrangements.
The successful candidate will be required to sign and adhere to IDIWA’s Child and Vulnerable Adults Protection and Safeguarding Protocols.

2.0 POSITION SUMMARY
The Communications Assistant will support the planning, development, and implementation of IDIWA’s communication and visibility strategies. The role involves content creation, media engagement, digital communications, documentation, and storytelling to amplify the voices and lived experiences of women and girls with disabilities.
The Communications Assistant will work closely with the Programs Manager and the Executive Director to ensure consistent, inclusive, and impactful communication across all IDIWA platforms and materials.
3.0 KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Content Development and Publications
Prepare and produce IDIWA’s monthly newsletter and maintain a regularly updated organizational blog highlighting activities, achievements, and impact stories
Develop case studies, human-interest stories, articles, and change stories documenting participant experiences and program outcomes
Provide editorial support, including writing, proofreading, and editing, to ensure clarity, consistency, and grammatical accuracy across all communication materials
B. Media and Public Engagement
In consultation with the Programs Manager and Executive Director, draft press releases and serve as a focal point for media engagement
Maintain and regularly update a database of program participants, partners, and stakeholders willing to engage with media
C. Digital Platforms and Website Management
Provide editorial oversight of website content and ensure timely updates of articles, stories, and events
Coordinate website maintenance and contribute to defining specifications for website and social media platform upgrades
Conduct monthly social media performance tracking and website analytics, including Google Analytics, to inform communication strategies
D. Audio-Visual Documentation and Archiving
Support planning and production of audio and video content, including interviews and short documentaries
Compile, archive, and manage all communication materials, including photographs, videos, audio recordings, and transcripts
Ensure informed consent and permission waivers are obtained, documented, and securely stored in line with safeguarding guidelines
E. Branding, Compliance, and Partnerships
Ensure appropriate permissions are obtained for the use of partner logos, publications, and third-party materials across all communication outputs
F. Events and Outreach Support
In collaboration with the Programs Manager and Executive Director, provide communication and visibility support for organizational events, including:
Development of promotional materials
Participant outreach
On-site documentation
4.0 REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND COMPETENCIES
Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Journalism, Media Studies, Development Communication, Public Relations, or a related field
At least 1–3 years’ experience in communications, media, or visibility roles, preferably within civil society or development organizations
Demonstrated experience in content writing, storytelling, digital communications, and media engagement
Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills in English
Proven ability to develop human-interest and change stories using a rights-based and survivor-centered approach
Practical experience managing websites and social media platforms
Ability to use basic design and multimedia tools (e.g., Canva, photography, video editing software)
Knowledge of social media and website analytics tools, including Google Analytics
Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines
High ethical standards, particularly regarding informed consent, safeguarding, and confidentiality
Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented and fast-paced environment
Creativity, attention to detail, and a results-oriented mindset
