Awori’s Story of Strength, Resilience, and Transformation

Born with a physical disability in Kityerera sub-county, Mayuge district, 42 years, mother of eight children Mirabu Awori’s life was once filled with uncertainty. She depended entirely on small-scale farming, which barely produced enough to feed her family. Many times, her children went to school hungry and nearly dropped out because she couldn’t afford scholastic materials.

Determined to diversify her livelihood, Awori’s life took another significant turn when she received livelihoods support from IDIWA. The support which was in form of knowledge through trainings on human rights, and entrepreneurship skills, helped her to establish a small shop in her community. Through this business, she is able to sell essential household items, offering a reliable source of income to support her children’s education and daily needs.

Understanding the power of multiple income streams, she ventured into livestock starting with two goats which was provided to her by IDIWA. This additional enterprise further strengthened her financial independence.

When she gained knowledge on human rights and economic empowerment. With her newfound confidence, she has since actively participated in community advocacy and self-development programs. She also became one of the beneficiaries of the Parish Development Model, a government initiative aimed at improving the livelihoods of vulnerable populations.

Using the funds she received through PDM, Awori made a bold investment, she bought a cow. This decision proved to be life-changing, as the cow not only provides milk for her children but also became an asset that boosted her financial status.

Awori Mirabu’s story is one of resilience, hard work, and empowerment. From a struggling single mother to a thriving businesswoman and farmer, she has defied the odds, proving that with the right support, knowledge, and determination, nothing is impossible. Today, she stands as an inspiration to other women and persons with disabilities in her community, showing them that they, too, can rise above their challenges and create a brighter future.
