PROJECT BACKGROUND Eastern Uganda faces extreme poverty and tops the list on GBV compared to other regions (regional police report 2012/13). Around one in five women worldwide is a woman with disability and GBV is compounded by disability-based discrimination, and takes unique forms, causes, results and consequences due to intersection of gender and disability in patriarchal societies hence heightened risk of domestic and sexual violence among women and girls with disability. IDIWA is implementing a project on Eliminating Sexual Gender Based Violence in Mayuge district, purposely to achieve inclusive services for WGDs who are survivors of SGBV in Mayuge district. This is achieved through: empowering WGDs to demand for disability responsive SGBV services, Strengthening mechanisms for protection and response to SGBV among WGDs, Strengthening capacity of IDIWA organs, WGDs organizations and Disabled People’s Organizations, to effectively influence GEWE, and advance progress on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls with Disabilities – EVAW/GWDs at sub national level; and strengthening IDIWA and partners’ resilience to sustainably respond to COVID-19 and other crises while maintaining and adapting to existing interventions to EVAWGDs with focus to the most vulnerable women and girls with disabilities.
